PADATHU BRANCH

In most cases, migration of Padathu Mappila families before the annexation of Thekkumkur to Travancore, was to nearby places in Kottayam only. But, after the annexation, several members of the family are said to have escaped to safety in faraway places. One such case was that of Thomman Tharkan, who was the occupant of Padathu Malika, when it was burnt down by the king's soldiers. He along with one of his sons managed to flee his burning home and escaped to Thekkan Paravoor in Kochi in a mercantile boat. There the duo remained incognito for a few days.

A few weeks later, Thomman Tharakan, when he went to church at Kandanad, happened to meet a woman from Puthuppally, who had been married into the Karot family there. That family later helped him find a dwelling near the market place there. He named the house there also as 'Padath.' On hearing from spies that a Padathu Mappila elder and his son had escaped to Kandanad, a few soldiers of the King went there also in search of him. They at last found out the house. But he tricked them into believing that he was both deaf and dumb, and that he was not the man they were looking for. They thus returned to Kottayam having failed in their mission to nab him.

Chathari, Kadungamangalam, Meenchirapadam, Choukkayil, Manayida, and Kandanadu are the Sub Branches coming under Padathu Shakha.
