YAKOOB KATHANAR

It was Padathu Mappila, who was instrumental in building the church on Devasvam land specially allotted to him for the purpose in those difficult days. After the church had been built, it was incumbent on him to get the services of a priest to consecrate it. He ensured that a priest from his own family in Kothamangalam should be brought for it. The priest was Yakoob Kathanar (Rev. Fr. Yakoob). He consecrated the church. Yakoob Kathanar was at Manarcadu for some more time. His death occurred at Manarcadu. As was the custom in those days, his body was buried inside the church. The stone slab which marks his grave is still seen there with old Malayalam inscriptions (Vattu lipi) on it. On the Saturday that follows "Three Days Lent" ('moonnu nombu') every year, Padathu Mappila family observes his remembrance day as the 'day of the departed priests.' On that occasion, a special morning service is normally held at the church. Also, prayers are offered at his grave site inside the nave and after that the annual meeting of the Kudumbayogam is normally held in the premises of the church. Of late, a portrait of "Yakoob Kathanar" has been unveiled in the 'priests hall' of the church.
